History and Character

In 1293 King Edward I purchased lands to establish a new town - the King's Town or Kingston upon Hull. The new town rose to became one of the three most important medieval towns in Yorkshire, and the second most important port on the East Coast of England by the end of the Middle Ages - second only to London.

It is this medieval new town that laid the foundations of what is now our Old Town. Century upon century of urban growth and change has moulded its history into the bricks and mortar. The Old Town today is an environment which reflects the story of Hull and its people: it is important to understand and respect its unique character as we develop for the future.

Character Areas:
The Hull Old Town Townscape Heritage Initiative has identified six character areas within its boundary. These are based on more detailed character zones within Hull City Council's Old Town Conservation Area Character Appraisal. The character areas define the current character of the Old Town, based on its historic development.
