Trinity and Posterngate

The Trinity and Posterngate character area has a predominately civic character although as it extends westerly its maritime feeling increases. This is a character area of diverse elements. The Waterfront/Dockside environment leads into the heart of the Old Town along the relatively strong route of Posterngate. This emerges at the hub of the Market Place (Trinity Square), dominated by two Grade 1 Listed Buildings: Holy Trinity Church and Trinity House.

This character area features an equal mix of medieval and Georgian street pattern. Market Place (Trinity Square), recently upgraded with good quality public realm works, is the largest formal open/civic space within the THI area. A number of key routes lead from and into the square: Trinity House Lane, Fish Street and North and South Church Side. However, the 'hidden' route along Prince Street is perhaps the most attractive in townscape terms.

Prince Street is a fine and locally distinct cobbled alleyway fronted by a curved residential terrace of 3 storey Georgian properties. A gap site opposite these (although a relatively pleasant greenspace) is a notable break in the built frontage that has altered the tight definition and narrow character along the route considerably.

Posterngate in comparison is a more sizeable, straight route that gives direct views from Market Place (Trinity Square) towards the Princes Dock area. It is fronted by a number of significantly sized buildings to the north and south, the majority of which are listed or of heritage merit.

The Princes Quay waterfront along the Georgian Princes Dock Street accommodates a continuous frontage of dockside properties on either side of the Posterngate junction. These are all listed or of heritage merit, reflecting their history as elegant merchant's houses and commercial establishments. These offer a diverse and interesting frontage to the western-most edge of the THI area.
